One Acre Fund is implementing the largest agroforestry project in the world, planting 1 billion trees in Rwanda, Malawi, Kenya and Nigeria. The project has been a great success and is ahead of schedule. The target of cumulatively planting 250 million trees by the end of 2024 will be exceeded to probably 300 million. The number of types of trees planted has increased from 28 to 42. Every dollar invested generates $14 for farmers, an unprecedented return. The 2023 Hilton Humanitarian Prize, a $2.5 million prize, has been awarded to OAF. It is an award given annually to non-profit organisations deemed to have made an extraordinary contribution to alleviating human suffering. Other good news is that the Dutch Ministry of Food Safety has committed substantial, unearmarked subsidies to OAF.
One Acre Fund is pioneering an impactful solution that places farmers first in the fight against hunger and poverty in rural sub-Saharan Africa. We provide low-income farmers with an innovative market bundle. With COmON’s support in Rwanda, Nigeria, Malawi and Kenya OAF is now trialling and scaling resilience interventions to improve farmers’ abilities to cope with weather volatility and other shocks.
Focus areas include soil health practices, crop and income diversification (including agroforestry), and improved insurance offerings. While expanding our programming in this area, OAF is also developing rigorous tailored measurement strategies to better capture their holistic impact.
Extreme poverty is primarily found in farming, with the majority of those living on $1 a day being farmers. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the 50 million farm families have the potential to significantly combat poverty and food insecurity in their communities by increasing productivity on their existing land. Farming serves as the catalyst for Africa's development, offering a pathway to prosperity for millions when farmers have the opportunity to enhance their productivity.
One Acre Fund is dedicated to unlocking the potential of agriculture to uplift communities and shape a better future. Focused on smallholder farmers, particularly women, we provide essential support for them to break the cycle of poverty. Through interventions such as access to hybrid seeds, quality fertilizer, and training in farming best practices, we empower farmers to feed their families, enhance nutrition, and boost their incomes.
Operating in rural areas, our emphasis on last-mile delivery ensures that even the most remote communities can benefit from our products. By investing in innovative solutions, we create cost-effective opportunities to improve the overall quality of life for these family farms.
