Nyika is Malawi’s largest national park located on the Nyika Plateau, a relatively large highland massif located on the international boundary between Malawi and Zambia. As a mountain catchment area, the plateau plays a significant role in providing opportunities to conserve several crucial ecosystem services, firstly, as a catchment for water production, and secondly, as a refuge area for rare and unique species of both fauna and flora.
These high-lying areas are often shrouded in mist, giving them a unique appeal.
COmON provided financial support to the Nyika National Park in Malawi. PPF and the government of Malawi signed a co-management agreement for the management of this park in 2023. Werner Myburgh, CEO Peace Parks Foundation, says the support of the COmON Foundation in 2023 has left an indelible mark on Nyika National Park and also the Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve in the Malawi-Zambia cross-border region.
“COmON’s crucial support paved the way for a 20-year comanagement agreement, which promotes protection and long-term sustainability. In addition, support for Banhine National Park is crucial for the conservation of the Great Limpopo cross-border area. This support helps restore migration patterns and protects the diverse wetland system, which plays a key role in mitigating climate change and conserving biodiversity.”
