Preserving genetic diversity of giant kelp

Kelp Forest Foundation
Fostering knowledge to protect our planet's future.

The Kelp Forest Foundation (KFF) is dedicated to bridging the knowledge gap surrounding kelp forests' ecosystem services. Our mission is to enhance awareness of the economic and ecological significance of kelp forests, foster research, expand knowledge, and advance the science related to the restoration of wild forests and the cultivation of kelp afforestation. COmON Foundation recognizes the critical importance of kelp forests, as they are among the planet's most productive natural ecosystems. They play a pivotal role in mitigating the effects of climate change and positively influencing various environmental challenges.

The mission is to independently and transparently establish the ecosystem value of cultivated kelp forests as a powerful nature-based solution.

Kelp Forest Foundation focuses on increasing knowledge about kelp, a seaweed that stores 10 times more CO2 than ordinary plants and trees. KFF collaborates with the University of Wageningen. A highlight in 2023 was the International Seaweed Symposium in Tasmania where more than 500 experts in seaweed science and industry shared their knowledge. KFF’s focus is now on expanding and attracting funding for new research topics, such as application in animal or fish feed to improve animal health, avoid emissions and as a sustainable alternative to protein.

The COmON Foundation recognizes the vital role of kelp forests in combatting climate change and addressing environmental challenges. The Kelp Forest Foundation (KFF) is dedicated to advancing research, raising awareness, and restoring wild and cultivated kelp forests, bridging the gap in scientific knowledge and ecosystem services.
