Debt-for-Nature Swap: Investing in the Future of the Galapagos

IMG 1639

Through a landmark debt-for-nature agreement between the government of Ecuador and its partners, part of the national debt has been converted into long-term funding for marine conservation in the Galapagos. The initiative secures lasting protection for Hermandad Marine Reserve, one of the most biodiverse ocean areas on the planet.

COmON Foundation played a key role in making this agreement possible, ensuring that financial innovation directly supports nature. The funds now enable the Charles Darwin Foundation to expand critical research on seabirds, ecosystems and climate resilience — creating a model for how economics and conservation can work hand in hand.

“When finance serves nature, conservation becomes not just possible, it becomes unstoppable.”
