The COmON Foundation’s ongoing support of the Simalaha Community Conservancy (SCC) in Zambia, has ensured that numerous aspects of development continue to be pursued ensuring positive outcomes for the local communities of the Sisheke and Sekute chiefdoms and their natural surroundings. The COmON support has a direct positive effect on the whole of the Royal Establishment of Barotseland.
The Simalaha Community Conservancy is the first of its kind in Zambia
In the Simalaha Community Conservancy the Sesheke and Sekhute Chiefdoms are taking ownership of their own destiny: following a community-led approach to improve basic human rights – such as access to food, health, livelihood opportunities and education – by responsibly managing and protecting natural resources and wildlife.
The Conservancy comprises 180 000 ha of communal land and lies within one of six key wildlife dispersal areas in the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), namely the Chobe Zambezi dispersal area that reaches from Chobe National Park in Botswana to Kafue National Park in Zambia.
After the success of The Cookstove Project in Simalaha, Zambia (10,000 cookstoves, fully Gold Standard certified and including CO2 credits trading with a serious income for the local communities), we are now investigating how another 40,000 cookstoves can be distributed in the region.
